Traffic was brought to a standstill when a lorry overturned at a busy Wigan motorway junction.
Tailbacks snaked for miles as emergency services investigated the accident and cleared up the scene at the M58's intersection with the M6 at Orrell. The driver, believed to be in his 40s, was today being treated in hospital.

The HGV, which appeared to have a cargo of sand, keeled over onto its left side as it came down the M58's eastbound sliproad towards the westerly of the two roundabouts this afternoon (Wednesday).

Firefighters from Leigh were among those who attended the scene.

A spokesman said: "The driver was conscious, breathing and being treated by paramedics in his overturned cab when we arrived at the scene. He wasn't realy trapped but we removed the windscreen to make it easier for him to be taken out.

"He was put on a stretcher and I believe he had some chest injuries."
